AccessionIndex: TCD-SCSS-V.20180409.001 Accession Date: 9-Apr-2018 Accession By: Provost Patrick Prendergast Object name: Trinity Monday Memorial Discourse 2018 on Professor John Gabriel Byrne Vintage: 2018 Synopsis: The annual Trinity Monday Discourse presented by Professor Jane Grimson of Trinity College Dublin. Description: Each year Trinity College Dublin celebrates Trinity Week, starting with Trinity Monday, when new Scholars and Fellows are announced, and the Trinity Monday Memorial Discourse is presented. Trinity Monday fell on the 9th April in 2018, and at 11:30am the Memorial Discourse was presented by Professor Jane Grimson (a distinguished computer scientist and former Vice-Provost of Trinity College) on the subject of the life of Professor John Gabriel Byrne, the founding professor and long-time head of the University’s Department of Computer Science [1], a Senior Fellow, dedicated public servant, and notably self-effacing and kindly gentleman, who is acknowledged by many as the “Father of Computing in Ireland”. Provost Patrick Prendergast arranged that this Discource be professionally recorded for posterity (by AV Company), and that the video and audio be preserved on both physical (DVD and CD) and electronic (MP4 and MP3 files) within this collection, as well as published in this online catalog of the collection. Further detail on the life and contributions of Prof.J.G.Byrne can be found in related documents in the associated folder in this catalog [2], in the nine interviews of Prof.J.G.Byrne by Maurice O'Keefe [3], in the book on Prof.J.G.Byrne edited by Chris Horn [4], and in the obituaries of Prof.J.G.Byrne [5, 6, 7]. The history of the department’s major contribution to Irish networking and the Internet is outlined in [8], while the history of the department itself can be found in [9]. Further details can be found in the history of the Department of Statistics (now united with Computer Science in the School of Computer Science and Statistics) [10], the history of the Computer Laboratory (now IT Services) [11], and the history of computing education in Irish schools by Elizabeth Oldham [12]. Many thanks to Provost Prendergast for generously arranging for the recording of the Discourse and for permission to preserve and publish the recording. Please be aware that in the official recordings in the associated folder in this catalog there is a 6 minute lead-in to the video recording and a 2 minute 30 second lead-in to the audio recording, so alternative versions without these delays are also provided.
