Engineering Note 850820-1
Conversion of DSI-32 to take NS32016.

The NS32016 is a 100% instruction set compatible microprocessor
to the NS32032. The NS32016 has a 32 bit wide internal data path
and a 16 bit external data path, while the NS32032 has both 32
bit wide internal and external data paths.
The measured performance degradation in using the NS32016 instead
of the NS32032 on the DSI-32 board is roughly 30%.
Also the use of the NS32016 CPU excludes the later installation
of the NS32082 memory management unit in the DSI-32. This means
that UNIX can not then be run on the board. For real time and
single user applications this is not a problem.

To install the NS32016 on the DSI-32 the following steps need to
be followed.

1) Remove the NS32032 CPU from the DSI-32 board. The NS32032 is
the 68 chip in the LCC socket in the center of the board.

2) Insert the NS32016 CPU in the 48 pin socket to the left of the
   LCC socket.

3) Set the berg jumpers as shown below.

    JB1 JB2 JB3

The above instructions are for replacing the 10MHz NS32032 with a
10MHz NS32016 CPU. If a 6MHz NS32016 is to be used then the
following steps need to be followed in addition to the three
steps above.

1) Remove the 20MHz crystal to the left of the NS32201 Timing
Control Unit (TCU) and replace it with a 12Mhz crystal.

2) Remove the 68 ohm resistor to the left of the TCU and replace
it with a 470 ohm resistor.

3) Tag a 22 pF capacitor from pin 12 of the Folding Pal (IC42) to
   pin 10 of IC42.

4) Set the berg jumpers as shown below.
